CUSTOM WINE STORAGE

Sorrells specialises in the design and creation of bespoke wine cellars, delivering tailored solutions for private collectors, interior designers and hospitality clients. Each project is approached as a complete wine cellar design, combining craftsmanship, technical expertise and a deep understanding of long-term wine storage.

From concept through to installation, our team creates custom wine storage solutions that are entirely unique to the client, the collection and the space.

Wine Cellar Design Tailored to Your Space

Every wine cellar design begins with a detailed understanding of the space, the architecture and how the cellar will be used. Whether integrated within a basement, kitchen, or standalone wine room, each bespoke wine cellar is designed to complement its surroundings while delivering optimal storage conditions.

Our approach ensures that each project balances visual impact with practical performance, resulting in a wine cellar that is both highly functional and architecturally refined. Our custom wine storage solutions are developed around the specific needs of each collection. From standard bottles to large formats, every element is considered, including capacity planning, accessibility and long-term storage requirements.

We design and manufacture all wine racking in-house, allowing complete control over quality, finish and detailing. This enables us to create truly bespoke wine cellars that respond precisely to both the collection and the environment in which they sit.

Craftsmanship and Engineering

Bespoke wine cellars can be supported by integrated climate control, ensuring stable temperature and humidity conditions for long-term wine preservation. Our systems are discreetly incorporated within the design, maintaining the visual integrity of the space.

Working closely with architects, interior designers and contractors, Sorrells delivers wine cellar design solutions that integrate seamlessly into both residential and commercial projects.

joinery & woodwork

From simple wine racks in a small unit, to the 400 sqft manufacturing HQ we’re in today, joinery has always been the core of Sorrells. We source timber by the log, selecting the finest cuts before machining, shaping, and finishing each piece within our own facility. Our factory is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and a dedicated spray shop, allowing us to deliver a flawless finish tailored to each project. Every element is crafted by our team of skilled joiners, whose expertise ensures consistency, precision, and timeless quality. The result is bespoke wine racking and cabinetry, built with integrity and designed to last for generations.

IN-HOUSE METAL FABRICATION

Our metalwork facility gives us complete control over every detail, from the structural framework to the finer finishing touches. Metalworks include custom doors, frames, racking and ironmongery, crafted to complement each project’s design.

Sorrells Temperature Control Systems

For clients requiring optimum storage conditions, a Sorrells climate control system is the ideal solution. Designed and modified in-house, these systems are engineered specifically for the long-term preservation of fine wine. They deliver stable temperature levels, protecting each bottle’s integrity over decades. Discreetly integrated within the design, our systems combine technical performance with subtle aesthetics, ensuring that the focus remains on the collection itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All wines, red, white, rosé, and sparkling, can be stored together for long-term ageing if kept at a consistent 12–14°C with 55–70% relative humidity. These conditions slow the ageing process, protect cork integrity, and preserve the wine’s structure and flavour profile.

For clients who wish to store multiple types of wine but also keep certain bottles ready to serve at their ideal drinking temperature, we can incorporate dual-zone storage or create separate serving areas within the design. This might mean a main climate-controlled cellar or wall for long-term storage, paired with a smaller, dedicated service fridge set to a higher or lower temperature depending on the wine style. This way, the collection remains protected as a whole, while select bottles are always ready to enjoy.

The best lighting for wine storage is low-heat, UV-safe LED lighting with a high colour rendering index (CRI). This ensures bottles are beautifully displayed without generating heat that could disturb the storage environment. We position lighting carefully to highlight labels and features without direct glare on the bottles.

Equally important is controlling natural light. Prolonged sun exposure can fade labels and, more critically, cause premature ageing of the wine through UV penetration. To prevent this, we often specify argon-filled, UV-filtering glass for doors, walls, or display fronts. Argon acts as an additional barrier against UV rays, while the specialist glazing ensures minimal thermal transfer. This combination allows for striking glass-fronted displays or cellars in sunlit rooms without compromising the integrity of the collection.

No. Underfloor heating raises the ambient temperature too much for stable wine storage, making it impossible to maintain the consistent conditions wine requires. For any wine storage, whether climate-controlled or not, we recommend the heating be removed or isolated from the storage area. Yes. We supply detailed technical drawings and specifications for all relevant trades. This includes service routes, structural requirements, and climate control positioning, so every detail is accounted for before installation begins.

Not usually, but this is a question for your builder. We design joinery to work within the existing structure, using templates to follow every angle precisely. If any structural alterations are required, we will coordinate with the builder to ensure safety and compliance.
